Australia’s Most Cost-Effective & Energy-Efficient Natural Lighting Solution
Natural light is an essential requirement of the National Construction Code (NCC). While the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DtS) provisions are based on roof opening size, the NCC also allows compliance through a performance solution, enabling innovative products to demonstrate compliance based on the daylight they actually deliver.
Solatube’s CodeMark-certified tubular daylighting systems gives architects and builders a compliant, cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to traditional roof lights.
NCC Natural Light Requirements
The NCC requires habitable rooms to receive adequate natural light.
Compliance can be achieved through either:
Deemed-to-Satisfy (DtS)
- Windows ≥ 10% of floor area
- Roof lights ≥ 3% of floor area
- Or a combination of both
Performance Solution A Performance Solution assesses the actual daylight delivered into the occupied space rather than simply the roof opening size. This pathway allows innovative daylighting systems, including CodeMark certified products, to demonstrate compliance through measured performance.
Why Specify Solatube?
Solatube tubular daylighting systems provide equivalent natural light performance to much larger traditional roof lights while using significantly smaller roof openings.
Benefits for Architects & Builders
✔ CodeMark certified performance solution
✔ Smaller roof penetrations
✔ Lower installation costs
✔ Improved thermal performance
✔ More roof space available for solar PV
✔ Reduced glare compared with oversized roof glazing
✔ Simplified specification and certification pathway
✔ Australia’s most cost-effective and energy-efficient natural lighting solution
| System | Equivalent Traditional Roof Light | Maximum Room Size | Multiples Of |
| Brighten Up 160DS | 600 × 600 mm | 12.25 m² | 2 units: 24.50 m² 3 units: 36.75 m² 4 units: 49.00 m² |
| Brighten Up 290DS | 650 × 650 mm | 14.08 m² | 2 units: 28.16 m² 3 units: 42.24 m² 4 units: 56.32 m² |
| Sola Master 750DS | 950 × 950 mm | 30.25 m² | 2 units: 60.50 m² 3 units: 90.75 m² 4 units: 121.00 m² |
*The maximum room sizes are based on Solatube’s CodeMark certified Performance Solutions. Multiple systems may be used for larger rooms or where improved daylight distribution is required
Why Smaller Roof Openings Matter
Because Solatube delivers high levels of natural light through compact roof openings, architects and builders can often achieve:
- Reduced roof framing modifications, Gyprock and painting requirements
- Less over flashing and tailored roof profiles
- Lower installation costs
- Improved building energy efficiency
- More usable roof space for solar PV and building services
Rather than increasing roof glazing to satisfy a geometric rule, Solatube demonstrates compliance through daylight performance.
