Project Overview

Queensland Tafe Acacia Ridge Campus an industry-standard building and construction facility which allows for training – across a wide range of different trade areas including painting, decorating, plastering, glass and glazing, tiling, flooring, and roofing. The training spaces replicate both commercial and residential settings, giving the students as close to a real-world environment as possible.

The Campus undertook a program to replace/refurbish roofs and greatly improve the natural lighting within the buildings to assist students and teachers alike in day to day learning activities.

Objective

The Client and Consultants required a minimum of 600 Lux, as a working light averaged across the whole of floor area. These lighting levels greatly assist with medium/fine works, colour matching, measuring, cutting, inspections, assembly and fabrication activities which are essential skills learnt by the students.

Natural Daylight allows students from different trades to work in real environmental external and internal lighting conditions which greatly assists critical task learning and improves individuals circadian rhythm responses which are critical in human behaviour. Inturn enhancing learning capabilities and improving productivity.

Another requirement for the daylight delivery was for it to be integrated with the artificial light delivery, by light censors, so that when sufficient daylight is delivered the artificial lights are off,  saving considerable energy costs.

Solution

The risk free selection of the Solatube Skyvault M74 Units was decided, after considerable daylight design information was presented by Solatube Australia, which scientifically proved Lux levels achieved the absolute minimising of solar heat gain, as tested by the National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC), with AS built testing.

Further post construction daylight levels were taken and the Solatube solution surpassed expectations.
